No spend challenge: how to start
A no spend challenge is a short stretch where you buy only what you truly need. It is one of the simplest ways to stop impulse buying, reset your habits and save money. Here is how to do one that you can actually finish, plus a free printable 30 day calendar.
1. Decide your rules
Write down what counts as essential: rent or mortgage, utilities, basic groceries, transport to work, medicine and debt payments. Everything else is a want. Decide in advance what happens with edge cases, like a birthday gift or a work lunch, so you are not negotiating with yourself in the moment.
2. Pick a length
- 7 days: the best starter. Long enough to notice your triggers.
- 30 days: the classic no spend challenge.
- No-buy month: essentials only, no exceptions.
- Low-buy: cut one category, like takeout, coffee or online shopping.
3. Remove the temptation
Unsubscribe from sale emails, delete saved cards from shopping apps and mute shopping accounts. Most impulse buys start with a notification.
4. Use the 72 hour rule
When you want something, write it down and wait 72 hours. If you still want it afterwards, you can buy it on purpose. Most of the time the urge has gone. Otti has this built in: put a want on a wait timer and decide when it ends.
5. Check in every night
A quick yes or no at the end of the day keeps you honest and builds a streak. Do not punish a slip. Note it and carry on tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions
What is a no spend challenge?
A no spend challenge is a set period, such as 7 or 30 days, where you only buy essentials like rent, groceries, transport and bills, and skip everything else.
What counts as essential spending?
Housing, utilities, basic groceries, transport to work, medicine and debt payments. Takeout, coffee runs, clothes, gadgets, games and online shopping are wants.
How long should a no spend challenge be?
Start with 7 days to build the habit, then try 30 days. A no-buy month is the strictest version.
What if I accidentally spend?
Note it and keep going. One slip does not end the challenge. Streak Shells in Otti exist for exactly this.
Does the 72 hour rule work?
Waiting 72 hours before buying a want removes most impulse purchases, because the urge fades while the price stays the same.
